How dog years actually work
Dogs grow up fast, then level off. Most of their aging happens early: the first year is about 15 human years, and the second adds roughly 9 more. After that, each year adds 4 to 7 human years depending on size, because bigger dogs age faster than smaller ones.

Is one dog year really seven human years?
No, that's a myth. Dogs age fastest in their first two years, then the rate slows and depends on size. A dog's first year is roughly 15 human years, the second adds about 9 more (so around 24), and each year after that adds 4 to 7 human years depending on how big the dog is.
Why does size change the calculation?
Small dogs live longer and age more slowly in later life, while large and giant breeds age faster and have shorter lifespans. So a 10-year-old small dog and a 10-year-old giant breed are at very different life stages.
